Midthunder was raised in Shiprock, New Mexico. She belongs to the Assiniboine tribe of Fort Peck. She was born in Shiprock, New Mexico on the Navajo Nation. Later, she moved to Santa Fe and studied at the Academy for Technology and the Classics as her mother operated a casting studio. Amber is of Native American ancestry on her father's side. Both are members of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribe. Amber's mother is adopted, so Amber is not sure of her mixed ancestry.
